The Headspace Beatnik Xtra Lite is included free with Macromedia's Director 7, in both Windows and MacOS versions. This 'lite' version of the Beatnik Xtra is a fully functional, ready-to-use Director Xtra that can be used in any of your Director projects, and can be included with Projectors as well.
Where should I start? You can familiarize yourself with the general capabilities of the Beatnik Xtra Lite by opening some of the built-in links from the Xtras-->Beatnik submenu, such as the 'Hyperactive' demo and 'What is Beatnik'. Next, when you are ready to try working with the Xtra yourself, open the Beatnik Behaviors link and try dragging and dropping the 'Play Groovoid' or 'Play RMF' behaviors onto objects or frames in your Director project. The Beatnik Behaviors let you quickly and easily harness much of the commonly used functionality of the Beatnik Xtra, without any coding.
Learning Beatnik-related Lingo and 'musicObject': To learn how to access the capabilities of the Beatnik Xtra Lite via Lingo, start by looking at the Beatnik-related Lingo scripts contained in the included sample movies in the Beatnik Sample Movies folder, located in the Beatnik folder. Review the Lingo contained in the Beatnik Behaviors, and familiarize yourself with how to instantiate the Beatnik Xtra Lite. Then, open the Beatnik Lingo Reference HTML file (reference.html) to learn more about the range of Beatnik functions and parameters ('musicObject') accessible via Lingo.
